Cockpit Drill: It is important that you can enter the car safely and then seat yourself so that you are not only comfortable but can reach and operate all of the controls correctly.

 

Controls & Instruments: You need to not only know what the different controls and instruments are but know how and when to use them!

 

Moving Away & Stopping: You should be able to move away under control and with due regard for other road users and also be able to stop the car under control in a Safe, Legal and Convenient place.

 

Safe Position: After moving away you'll need to drive in a position on the road which is safe and where you won't become a hazard to other road users.

 

Mirrors - Vision & Use: You should be able to apply the MSM routine when approaching and dealing with hazards making sure you check the correct mirrors for your intended manoeuvre.

 

Signals: As part of your MSM routine you should be able to give a suitable signal only when necessary.

 

Anticipation & Planning: Anticipation and Planning is a major part of safe driving, you should be able to anticipate the actions of other road users and also plan your driving.

 

Use of Speed: You should drive at a speed suitable for the road and traffic conditions.

 

Other Traffic: You should be able to meet, cross and overtake other traffic in a safe manner.

 

Junctions: You should be able to approach and emerge from a variety of junctions and apply the MSM routine to deal with them.

 

Roundabouts: You should be able to apply the MSM routine to join and leave a roundabout.

 

Pedestrian Crossings: You should be able to apply the MSM routine when approaching pedestrian crossings while anticipating the actions of pedestrians.

 

Dual Carriageways: You should be able to position the car correctly, overtake and also make progress when safe to do so.

 

Turing the Vehicle Around: You should be able to turn the vehicle round to face the opposite direction using forward and reverse gears while keeping the car under full control and having due regard for other road users.

 

Reversing: Reverse into an entrance of a limited open under full control and with due regard for other road users.

 

Parking: You should be able to reverse into a parking space in a car park or at the side of the road while keeping the car under full control and with due regard for other road users.

 

Emergency Stop: You should be able to stop the car promptly and under control as in an emergency and then move off under control when safe to do so.

 

Darkness & Weather Conditions: Learn to drive during the hours of darkness and in a variety of weather conditions while making use of necessary controls.

 

Environmental Issues: You should drive in a manner which is safer to the environment while not putting yourself or any other road users at risk and be aware of the impact of driving on the environment.

 

Carrying Passengers and Loads: Carrying additional passengers or loads can have an impact on the car and its handling, you need to be aware of this and also the preparation required.

 

Vehicle Safety Checks: You should make regular checks of your vehicle to recognise problems early and to keep your car maintained.
